At our festival, attendees will embark on an educational odyssey through the “Race Films” of the early 20th century. You will learn how pioneers like Oscar Micheaux and the Lincoln Motion Picture Company built an independent industry to counter the era’s limited and stereotypical casting, creating films specifically for Black audiences. These early masterpieces serve as a masterclass in using cinema as a tool for social critique and the reclaiming of narratives.
Beyond the historical screenings, the festival provides an elite space to analyse the evolution of the Black protagonist. You will trace the journey from the dignified leading roles of Sidney Poitier to the independent authority of the Blaxploitation era’s most iconic figures. Through expert-led seminars, guests will explore how these performances were acts of cultural revolution that paved the way for contemporary visionaries like Ava DuVernay and Jordan Peele.
